ABSTRACTION IN SAND I, HUACACHINA, PERU, 2014

I arrived by bus in the little town of Huacachina. I wanted to find solitude to confront myself, with the hope of finding inner peace. Huacachina is a tiny enclave of buildings built around an oasis in the middle of the desert. According to local legend, the lagoon was created when a young Incan princess accidentally dropped her mirror while bathing. The mirror broke, the water spilled out, and she was transformed into a mermaid who is said to still inhabit the lagoon. The name “Huacachina” likely comes from the Quechua wakachina, meaning “crying woman” — echoing the myth’s tone of sorrow and transformation.

The morning after my arrival, and for several days following, I wandered into the desert in search of solace. I wanted to walk as far into the desert as I could — to find a place where I would be completely alone with the elements… and with my Self. The dunes of the desert around Huacachina are some of the tallest in South America, and they are truly stunning. I was fascinated by the graphic shapes and subtle colours created by the wind and sand.

This series, Abstraction in Sand, is part of the work that I created from those soul-searching moments in time.

Je suis arrivé en bus dans la petite ville de Huacachina. Je cherchais la solitude pour me confronter à moi-même, dans l’espoir de trouver la paix intérieure. Huacachina est un minuscule ensemble de bâtiments construits autour d’une oasis au cœur du désert. Selon la légende locale, la lagune fut créée lorsqu’une jeune princesse inca laissa tomber son miroir en se baignant. Le miroir se brisa, l’eau s’écoula, et elle fut transformée en sirène, qui, dit-on, habite encore la lagune. Le nom « Huacachina » viendrait probablement du quechua wakachina, signifiant « la femme qui pleure », rappelant la tonalité de chagrin et de transformation de ce mythe.

Le matin après mon arrivée, et pendant plusieurs jours, j’ai erré dans le désert à la recherche d’un apaisement. Je voulais marcher aussi loin que possible pour trouver un endroit où je serais complètement seul avec les éléments… et avec mon Moi. Les dunes du désert qui entoure Huacachina comptent parmi les plus hautes d’Amérique du Sud, et elles sont véritablement sublimes. J’étais fasciné par les formes graphiques et les nuances subtiles créées par le vent et le sable.

Cette série, Abstraction dans le sable, fait partie du travail que j’ai créé à partir de ces moments de quête intérieure.
