ANGEL, LOPUD, CROATIA, 2004

I often examine the darkness that inevitably appears in my shadow, but the ultimate goal is also to find my light. As Jung reminded us, “no tree can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.”

My shadow fell between two fishermen’s cages and, for an instant, took the shape of an angel — dark, imperfect, yet somehow luminous. Rilke wrote that “every angel is terrifying,” and I have witnessed in myself the dragon that the self-proclaimed angel can become in its falsely proud perfection.

I have chosen instead the dialectical reconciliation of opposites — the necessity of balance and acknowledgment of these two equally powerful forces — in my ongoing quest to find myself.

If ordered as a fine art print: printed on premium baryta paper. If ordered mounted and framed: printed on premium baryta paper, mounted on 1 mm aluminium collage and framed in a black US Box profile. Framing adds 3.5 cm to both the height and width.

J’examine souvent l’obscurité qui se manifeste inévitablement dans mon ombre, mais le but ultime est aussi de trouver ma lumière. Comme Jung nous le rappelle, « nul arbre ne peut pousser jusqu’au ciel si ses racines ne plongent pas jusqu’en enfer. »

Mon ombre est tombée entre deux cages de pêcheurs et, l’espace d’un instant, a pris la forme d’un ange — sombre, imparfait, et pourtant lumineux. Rilke a écrit que « tout ange est terrible », et j’ai vu en moi le dragon que l’ange autoproclamé peut devenir dans sa perfection faussement fière.

J’ai donc choisi la réconciliation dialectique des contraires — la nécessité de l’équilibre et de la reconnaissance de ces deux forces également puissantes — dans ma quête constante pour me trouver moi-même.
