‘MARKET VENDORS’, KAMPONG CHHNANG, CAMBODIA, 2012

In 2012, I made a fascinating journey to Cambodia with my then partner. After visiting Phnom Penh and the temples of Siem Reap, we took a boat along the Sangker River from Tonlé Sap Lake to Battambang, my son’s grandfather’s birthplace. Along the way, we made a stopover in a small city called Kampong Chhnang, the name of which translates roughly to “port of clay” or “pottery port.”

The market, often referred to as Phsar Chhnang or Phsar Leu, is the main daily marketplace for locals in the town of Kampong Chhnang. It is known for fresh produce, local crafts, and everyday goods — and is far less tourist-dominated than other major markets in Cambodia.

When I travel, and especially in my Visions of Humanity series, I love to capture scenes like this: authentic, raw images of everyday life. The people living their simple daily routines in such places carry a certain nobility and grace that I find enchanting.

En 2012, j’ai entrepris un voyage fascinant au Cambodge avec ma compagne de l’époque. Après avoir visité Phnom Penh et les temples de Siem Reap, nous avons pris un bateau sur la rivière Sangker, du lac Tonlé Sap jusqu’à Battambang, la ville natale du grand-père de mon fils. En chemin, nous avons fait une halte dans une petite ville appelée Kampong Chhnang, dont le nom se traduit approximativement par « port de l’argile » ou « port de la poterie ».

Le marché, souvent appelé Phsar Chhnang ou Phsar Leu, est le principal marché quotidien des habitants de la ville. On y trouve des produits frais, de l’artisanat local et des biens de la vie courante — un lieu beaucoup moins fréquenté par les touristes que les grands marchés du pays.

Lorsque je voyage, et plus particulièrement dans ma série Visions of Humanity, j’aime capturer des scènes comme celle-ci : des images authentiques, brutes, de la vie quotidienne. Les êtres humains qui vivent simplement leur quotidien dans ces endroits dégagent une certaine noblesse et une grâce qui m’enchantent.
