‘MOP HEAD’, CANARY ISLANDS, 1989

Taken on a beautiful old yacht during a modelling shoot many years ago, this mop seemed to speak to me — or rather, ignored me and simply looked the other way.

Anthropomorphism comes from the Greek ánthrōpos (human) and morphē (form), and is the act of ascribing human qualities, emotions, or intentions to nonhuman entities — objects, animals, even natural phenomena. In psychology, it’s linked to our brain’s pattern recognition, the same cognitive bias that makes us see faces in clouds, power sockets, or, in my case, a mop.

Schopenhauer noted that human beings project their own will and subjectivity onto the world. And so, it seems, I see human emotion in a mop…

Photographié sur un vieux yacht lors d’une séance photo de mannequinat il y a de nombreuses années, ce balai m’a semblé me parler — ou plutôt m’ignorer et détourner le regard.

L’anthropomorphisme vient du grec ánthrōpos (homme) et morphē (forme) et désigne le fait d’attribuer des qualités, des émotions ou des intentions humaines à des entités non humaines — objets, animaux, voire phénomènes naturels. En psychologie, il est lié à la reconnaissance des formes par le cerveau, ce biais cognitif qui nous fait voir des visages dans les nuages, les prises électriques… ou, dans mon cas, dans une serpillière.

Schopenhauer remarquait que les êtres humains projettent leur propre volonté et leur subjectivité sur le monde. Ainsi, il semble que je voie une émotion humaine dans une serpillière…
