MOTHER CAN YOU HEAR ME? MONASTERIO DE SANTA CATALINA, AREQUIPA, PERU, 2014

The Santa Catalina Monastery was founded on the 10th of September, 1579, as a convent exclusively for women and remains active to this day. It was only opened to the public in 1970. Within its walls reigns an atmosphere that is both beautiful and serene.

I dedicated this photograph to my mother, who passed away that same year, and to all mothers. For me, the image of the Madonna represents this — a symbol of motherhood, protective and benevolent, reaching out from another plane of existence to watch over us.

Le monastère de Santa Catalina fut fondé le 10 septembre 1579 comme couvent exclusivement réservé aux femmes, et il demeure actif à ce jour. Il ne fut ouvert au public qu’en 1970. À l’intérieur règne une atmosphère à la fois belle et sereine.

J’ai dédié cette photographie à ma mère, disparue la même année, ainsi qu’à toutes les mères. Pour moi, l’image de la Madone incarne cela — un symbole maternel, protecteur et bienveillant, tendant la main depuis un autre plan d’existence pour veiller sur nous.
