REFLECTION (AUTOPORTRAIT) CAPRI 2014

This photograph was born from the play of light on a bedroom window during a few weeks in Anacapri, on the island of Capri. At first, it seems like a simple reflection — the mirror of a face on glass. But the word itself carries two meanings: the outward surface that repeats an image, and the inward turning of thought.

Here, both dimensions merge. The photograph holds the tension between appearance and meditation, between the immediacy of a gaze and the depth of self-inquiry. The outer reflection suggests vanity, even narcissism — a body checking itself in the glass. Yet at the same time, the blurred distortion invites something else: the darker, quieter process of looking inward, where the image becomes a question rather than an answer.

The work stages a battle that runs through every human being: the pull of surface and the call of depth, the fragile body and the restless spirit, the desire to affirm the self and the temptation to dissolve it. In the dissonance of these opposites, the photograph finds its balance — a reconciliation not by erasing conflict, but by holding both realities together.

“Reflection” thus becomes both mirror and meditation. It reminds us that to look at oneself is never neutral: it is to face the frailties and contradictions of our humanity, and perhaps to glimpse, if only for a moment, the fragile unity that binds them.

Cette photographie est née du jeu de la lumière sur la fenêtre d’une chambre, au cours de quelques semaines passées à Anacapri, sur l’île de Capri. À première vue, il ne s’agit que d’un simple reflet — l’image d’un visage sur la vitre. Mais le mot lui-même porte deux sens : le reflet extérieur qui renvoie une image, et la réflexion intérieure, plus méditative.

Ici, ces deux dimensions se rejoignent. La photographie contient la tension entre l’apparence et la méditation, entre l’immédiateté d’un regard et la profondeur de l’introspection. Le reflet extérieur suggère la vanité, voire le narcissisme — un corps qui se scrute dans la glace. Et pourtant, la distorsion floue invite à tout autre chose : le processus plus sombre et plus silencieux du regard intérieur, où l’image devient question plutôt que réponse.

L’œuvre met en scène une lutte qui traverse tout être humain : l’attraction de la surface et l’appel de la profondeur, la fragilité du corps et l’inquiétude de l’esprit, le désir d’affirmer le moi et la tentation de le dissoudre. Dans la dissonance de ces contraires, la photographie trouve son équilibre — une réconciliation, non pas en effaçant le conflit, mais en tenant ensemble ces deux réalités.

« Reflection » devient ainsi à la fois miroir et méditation. Elle nous rappelle que se regarder n’est jamais un geste neutre : c’est affronter les fragilités et les contradictions de notre humanité, et peut-être apercevoir, l’espace d’un instant, l’unité fragile qui les relie.
