RELIGION. PARIS, 2011.

I’ve always been fascintated by religious symbolism. the portrayal of beliefs in physical form that convey a message. Even more so, when these symbols are somehow altered by the passage of time or some hazardous event or accident, that adds on yet another layer of meaning. Here, in the renovation  of a church, I saw the symbol of a saint imprisoned by the hands of man and how our modern society has abandoned the principals of a church that maybe strayed to far away from its original principles of love and brotherhood. It reminds me of the French revolution, when the French king and his family were imprisoned and eventually executed and I couldn’t help but wonder if Christianity itself will finish totally abandoned. What will remain after the void created, only time can tell.

J’ai toujours été fasciné par le symbolisme religieux — la manière dont la foi se matérialise dans des formes qui transmettent un message. Plus encore lorsque ces symboles, altérés par le temps ou par un événement accidentel, gagnent une nouvelle dimension de sens. Ici, dans la rénovation d’une église, j’ai vu le symbole d’un saint emprisonné par les mains de l’homme, reflet d’une société moderne qui semble avoir abandonné les principes d’une Église peut-être elle-même égarée loin de ses idéaux d’amour et de fraternité. Cela m’a rappelé la Révolution française, lorsque le roi et sa famille furent emprisonnés puis exécutés. Et je me suis demandé si le christianisme, lui aussi, finirait totalement abandonné. Ce qu’il restera du vide créé, seul le temps le dira.
