‘SOME LIKE IT HOT’, GAY PRIDE, SAN FRANCISCO, 1991

In 1991, I took my baby son and his mother on a tour around the world. We arrived in San Francisco from Tokyo that June. I had decided to stop modelling after a final stint in Japan — a period that turned out to be something of a financial disaster due to the economic downturn following the Gulf War — and I wanted to dedicate myself fully to photography.

When I heard there was going to be a Gay Pride march on June 30ᵗʰ, I went down there with my camera. I was myself bisexual at the time, or perhaps more of a closeted gay man — terrified of the rampant AIDS epidemic and still trying to keep work and play separate within the fashion world, for many reasons. I hadn’t yet found the courage to come out.

The theme of the march that year was Generations of Pride, and it was a grand affair, with between 300,000 and 500,000 participants — a joyously defiant show of pride and honour, despite the sadness and anger surrounding the epidemic and the lack of sufficient help from the authorities to combat it.

En 1991, j’ai entrepris un tour du monde avec mon fils encore bébé et sa mère. Nous sommes arrivés à San Francisco depuis Tokyo au mois de juin. J’avais décidé d’arrêter le mannequinat après un dernier séjour au Japon — une période qui s’était révélée désastreuse sur le plan financier à cause du ralentissement économique provoqué par la guerre du Golfe — et je voulais désormais me consacrer entièrement à la photographie.

En apprenant qu’une Gay Pride aurait lieu le 30 juin, je suis descendu dans la rue avec mon appareil photo. J’étais alors bisexuel, ou plutôt un homosexuel encore caché — terrifié par l’épidémie de sida qui faisait rage et soucieux de séparer travail et plaisir dans le milieu de la mode, pour de multiples raisons. Je n’avais pas encore eu le courage d’assumer pleinement qui j’étais.

Le thème du défilé cette année-là était Generations of Pride, et ce fut un événement grandiose : entre 300 000 et 500 000 participants dans une célébration à la fois joyeuse et combative, malgré la tristesse et la colère suscitées par l’épidémie et par l’insuffisance de l’aide apportée par les autorités pour la combattre.
