TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE. RWANDA, 1988.

This was the only time I had the opportunity to experience Sub-Saharan Africa. I travelled to Rwanda for a modeling job and we travelled all over this small beautful country, where i was photographed for an editorial and cover of a Dutch Magazine called Avenue. I was knocked out by the kindness and curiosity of the people there and was devestated when a few months later, the country sank into a terrible civil war and genocide that I could never have imagined could take place. I wonder if thes two ladies survived those terrible times and what became of them… the image that i captured i have named in reference to the famous Shakespeare quote ‘To be or not to be’ which in its essence says:

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?

Hamlet asked whether it is nobler to be or not to be; the question here is whether it is possible to see or not to see — to face truth, or to remain in the shadow of illusion.

Ce fut la seule fois où j’eus l’occasion de découvrir l’Afrique subsaharienne. Je me suis rendu au Rwanda pour un travail de mannequinat, et nous avons parcouru ce petit pays magnifique, où j’ai été photographié pour un éditorial et la couverture d’un magazine néerlandais appelé Avenue.

J’ai été profondément touché par la gentillesse et la curiosité des habitants, et bouleversé quelques mois plus tard lorsque le pays sombra dans une terrible guerre civile et un génocide que je n’aurais jamais pu imaginer possibles. Je me demande encore si ces deux femmes ont survécu à ces temps tragiques, et ce qu’elles sont devenues…

L’image que j’ai capturée porte un nom inspiré de la célèbre citation de Shakespeare « To be or not to be » qui, dans son essence, dit :

Être ou ne pas être, telle est la question :
S’il est plus noble pour l’esprit de souffrir
Les coups et les flèches d’une fortune outrageuse,
Ou de prendre les armes contre une mer de tourments,
Et, en les affrontant, y mettre fin ?

Hamlet se demandait s’il est plus noble d’être ou de ne pas être ; la question, ici, est de savoir s’il est possible de voir ou de ne pas voir — d’affronter la vérité ou de demeurer dans l’ombre de l’illusion.
